From High School Artist to Beauty Professional: The Journey Behind The Makeup Monk

Florence Pham 2025

Art has always been part of who I am. Long before I worked in beauty, permanent makeup, skincare, lashes, and brows professionally, I was the student in high school constantly drawing, creating, and experimenting with different forms of art. Creativity was never just a hobby for me — it became the foundation for the career and business I have today.

2014-2017: Edison High School Alumni

Like many artists, my journey started with curiosity. In high school, I spent countless hours sketching faces, Painting, studying symmetry, shading, color theory, and fine details. I was fascinated by how small artistic changes could completely transform a person’s appearance and confidence. What started on paper slowly evolved into a passion for beauty artistry.

Over time, I realized that beauty services are a form of art. Every brow shape, lash lift, skincare treatment, and permanent makeup service requires precision, balance, creativity, and an eye for detail. The same artistic principles I practiced years ago became the skills I use daily with clients at The Makeup Monk.

From Freelance Graphic Design to Beauty Artistry

Before fully stepping into the beauty industry, I also explored creativity through freelance graphic design. I spent time designing visuals, learning branding, working with composition, color balance, typography, and digital aesthetics. Graphic design taught me how important presentation, precision, and visual harmony are when creating something that captures attention.

That experience helped shape my artistic eye even further. Understanding layout, symmetry, and visual balance translated naturally into beauty artistry. Whether designing brows, enhancing lashes, or creating customized permanent makeup, I realized the same creative principles applied across every artistic medium.

Freelance design also taught me how to work closely with people, understand their vision, and create personalized results based on individual style and preferences. That client-focused mindset became a major part of how I approach beauty services today.

Looking back, graphic design became another stepping stone in my creative evolution. It strengthened both my technical and artistic skills while helping me develop the attention to detail that now defines my work at The Makeup Monk.

Turning Creativity Into a Career

Building a career in the beauty industry was never just about trends for me. It was about helping people feel confident while creating results that look natural, elevated, and customized to each person’s features. I became passionate about enhancing beauty instead of masking it.

As my experience grew, so did my services. What began with artistic passion expanded into advanced beauty treatments including:

  • Permanent Makeup

  • Nano Brows

  • Powder Brows

  • Lash Lifts & Tint

  • Brow Laminations

  • Brow Shaping

  • Facial & Body Waxing

  • Skincare Treatments

  • Chemical Peels

  • Acne Treatments

  • Microchanneling

Each service combines artistry with technical skill. Whether I’m creating soft nano hairstrokes, performing a lash lift, or customizing a skincare treatment, every appointment is approached with the same attention to detail I developed as an artist years ago.

The Philosophy Behind The Makeup Monk

The name The Makeup Monk represents more than beauty services. It reflects patience, precision, mindfulness, and dedication to the craft. I believe beauty treatments should feel intentional, personalized, and confidence-boosting.

My artistic background taught me that no two faces are identical. That is why I focus on customized results instead of one-size-fits-all beauty trends. Every client has unique facial features, skin concerns, and beauty goals. My approach is centered around enhancing natural beauty while maintaining balance and harmony.

Why Artistry Matters in Beauty

Many people do not realize how much artistry impacts beauty services. A skilled beauty professional needs an understanding of:

  • Facial symmetry

  • Proportion and balance

  • Color theory

  • Fine detail work

  • Skin tones and undertones

  • Precision mapping

  • Creative customization

These artistic fundamentals are especially important in permanent makeup and brow artistry, where even the smallest detail can completely change the final result.

Continuing to Grow as an Artist

Even after years in the beauty industry, I still see myself as an artist first. The beauty world constantly evolves, and I continue learning new techniques, advanced treatments, and modern beauty innovations to improve the client experience.

My goal has always been to create a welcoming, inclusive environment where clients feel comfortable, confident, and cared for. Beauty is personal, and every service should reflect the individuality of the person receiving it.

More Than Beauty Services

For me, this journey has always been about transformation — not just physically, but emotionally. Seeing someone leave an appointment feeling more confident, refreshed, and empowered is one of the most rewarding parts of being an artist in the beauty industry.

From drawing in high school to building The Makeup Monk, creativity has remained at the center of everything I do. What started as a passion for art became a career dedicated to helping others look and feel their best.

If you are looking for personalized beauty services that combine artistry, precision, and natural-looking results, The Makeup Monk offers professional permanent makeup, skincare, lash, and brow services designed to enhance your natural beauty with an artistic touch.
